I have lived in the beautiful
and friendly Gila Valley, at the foot of the beautiful Mount Graham near
Safford, AZ, since April, 1994. I grew up in Oregon and, right here in
the middle of the Arizona desert, I found a true "Oregon mountain"
with cool breezes, cold mountain streams, and trees galore! I took the
above photo of Mount Graham in February, 1995, from my front porch. We
do get a bit of snow in the winter, and we are not usually as hot as Phoenix
in the summer. The nice part of summer here is that it cools down a lot
at night, unlike the big cities.
The upper Gila Valley is the site of many fertile farms which produce
a lot of cotton. There are three main cities/towns, Safford, Thatcher
and Pima, which form a mostly rural community. Eastern Arizona College,
a growing 2-year college, provides excellent education and cultural opportunities.
Water is in good supply, as evidenced by the beautiful pond above, and
the area is known for its hot artesian mineral wells. The area is full
of wildlife and is one of the bird watching capitals of the United States.
Nearly 2/3 of all birds in the United States pass through this area on
their migration routes. We have many recreation opportunities abound in
this area and this is also one excellent rock-hounding area. Since this
is still largely a rural area, we don't have the crime of the big cities,
and the people here are pretty friendly. When I first got here, even as
a stranger, I couldn't just go into a store and pop right out again. The
shop keepers would always want to talk to me. And now that they know me,
there are smiles and waves and greetings everywhere.
